I have been told that the ring (crown) and pinion gears in the Chevy 490 are the same as the Model T. If that is the case then finding replacements should be much easier. Maybe there are some Model T parts in Ireland.

You can use the T-F''D's just the same, both in normal and high speed ratio.

Go to this page and you will get both pinion and crown wheel:
USA: http://www.snydersantiqueauto.com/ring-gear-and-pinion
https://www.modeltford.com/item/2518-3-1.aspx
http://www.macsautoparts.com/ford_m...ooth-ring-gear-13-tooth-pinion-gear.html

GB: http://quaife.co.uk/quaife-products/crown-wheel-and-pinions/

Check them out about prices/terms.

I have not found more than one cutting and think they have left the newer oblique cut ring gear.

When do you need them? I have a new spare set if needed quick.

I have heard the same about using the Model T crown and pinion.
This was posted here some time back;

The one thing to remember as stated in above, T gears are straight cut.

Are the 490 ring and pinion gears and the thrust bearing the same as in the 1923-1924 Superior Touring cars?

Mike,
R&P gears on 1922 490 and 1923-24 Superior models are same, 1922 was the first model with spiral cut teeth. On earlier models of 490 R&P gears has straight cut gears. Also propeller shaft, pinion bearing and other parts on 1922-1924 models differ from earlier models of 490.

As to the thrust bearing they are same all years, but on 1922-1924 only on the right side of the differential, because on the left side is a ball thrust bearing, not the lousy pot metal bearing between two steel washers. Therefore there are no pins on the left side of the differential house or on the left rear axle shaft.

About the old pot metal thrust bearing: If there is something still left of it, replace it with a new production bronze bearing, same as is selling for Ford Model T.

Very helpful thank you. I wonder does the new T combined roller and thrust bearing fit 490? My problem started with the old roller bearing braking up.

He might just have some information for you and who knows you may not have been the first to ask.
Fun Projects makes the replacement roller bearing kits.
