We just took our recently acquired 54 210 Handyman wagon out for a road trip and I was shocked to learn that we got 9.4 miles per gallon.
Is this normal for these 6 ctlinder engines?

My '55 235 gets around 18mpg on the road at 60mph. It's a stick shift. Sometimes a little more, sometimes a little less. Powerglide would be less, but not 9.4.

We are driving our 54 Bel Air, Powerglide, Power Steering, Power Brakes, 4 Door Sedan. On several tanks of gas we have gotten the following MPG. 16.454, 16.146, 16.576, 11.292, 11.051, 12.656. It depends on how hard I pushed it and how much traffic. If we are in the country or in town.

Get in the 18 MPG range at 60-65 MPH with my '50 PG.
I would check the timing - if retatded will hurt milage. Also common for the vacuum power piston to be stuck in the rich -full power position which will really kill the milage.Top cover of carbuetor will need to be removed to inspect.
The heavy wagon should deliver at least 15 on the highway.

At 50 to 55 my 52 with 216 3 spd (4:11) gets around 18, at 60 to 65 around 15. Took a trip to Canada this last summer for the 44th International car show and leading 3 other cars at 65 going into the wind at times was closer to 12 over all. You may wabt to check the operation of the choke and the heat riser.
