Occasionally my 1950 235cu.in. 6 volt standard point system ignition will backfire.I hope one of you can tell me what to look at. The engine runs fine normally. No missing or run-on. Thanks

A backfire thru the carb is usually caused by timing, could be an intake valve haniging up and not closing properly, also could be an occasional cross fire in the distributor cap or a cross fire from spark plug wires touching.

Does it back fire thru the exhaust or thru the carburetor (air cleaner)??

A backfire thru the exhaust is usually caused by an interuption in the ignition. When the ign. is interupted for a second or two fuel continues to flow thru the manifold. When the fuel hits the hot muffler/exhaust it explodes - which is the back fire. Can cause the muffler to blow-up if its bad enough.
An example is if you drive along and turn the key off and back on.If the muffler is hot and the gas pedal is depressed you will usually get a back-fire.
Cause?..I would begin by checking all wire connections, the lead wire from the coil to the side of the distributor (can have broken wire inside of insulation) and reolace the condenser...I assume that the points are OK and correctly adjusted.
Keep us posted.

orry guy's for the long delay in reporting back to you. I checked all of the wires and they all have good connections. The points have no pit marks from arcing. I did find however, that the inside of the distributor had small metal filing that is coming from the rotor tip rubbing on the inside of the distributor cap. A few of the spark plug terminals inside the cap have been ground down a 1/16 of inches or so. It seems that the distributor shaft has excessive side movement in it. Any suggestions? It is still has a 6 volt system distributor.

Sounds like you might have a bent distributor shaft. :( :( :(
