I have had my pancake horn rebuilt. The horn button does not work. For the interim. I have a generic horn button and I want to attach it to the bottom of the dash (hidden)but accessible while driving. I want to re wire from the horn- to the new horn button. The electric schematic shows the horn wires going to the high beam foot switch then to the Light Switch on the Dashboard. The horn button shows power side from switch to horn button then to horn. If someone has some electrical expertise I would very much appreciate the insight and a schematic. Also would this horn re-wire need a 6 v relay? And an inline fuse of what amperage. The horn button is rated at 5 amps. Also I can trace my wires as a new wiring harness was put in in the 1970's as original. The 3 cloth covered wires have 1.) dash redlines, 2. dash black lines. 3. No lines - this will make it easier to trace. Thanks in advance.

I think you have mis-read the wiring diagram. Not an unusual happening as the wires to the headlights and horn run next to each other in the diagram. One wire (the ground) runs from a terminal on the horn into a hole in the steering column mast jacket and to the mast jacket bushing. When the horn button is pressed the contact ring on the bushing is grounded. The other wire runs from the other terminal on the horn to a terminal on the light switch. That is the fused positive 6 volt feed to the horn.
If you want to wire another button then you have the option of putting the button in the "hot" (6 volt positive) line and having the other terminal on the horn grounded. Or you can wire it with the button in the horn ground.

In the description I got my wires crossed. You are correct about my description. My apologies- I have been working on the Headlight wiring in the last couple of days. Thanks for providing a solution for the interim.

I all too often get my brain and fingers disconnected. Skipper points them out most every time.
If the harness is installed. To get the horn to work all you need to do is put the button between a ground and the horn terminal that goes to the steering column.

6 Volt PANCAKE HORN--OK- Temp horn wire installed with horn button. Ran from splice at hole in steering column to horn button then horn button to battery ground. The horn did not activate it- it acted like it wanted to. then after several attempts the horn sounded but was intermittent. I took the horn apart because the exterior connectors were loose. Here is a list of items as they were removed. 1.) chrome cover 2.) black steel ring with lip facing out from horn to back of chrome cover. 3.) a steel disc- looks like the bottom of a can with concentric circular raised rings. There is a large nut with an adjustment screw in the center. On the back facing the interior of the housing is a solid steel shaft about 1/4 round and 1/2 inch long that protrudes from the steel disc. WHERE DOES THIS ALIGN INSIDE. DOES THIS GO OVER TOP WHERE THE CONTACT IS? Also, I did not see any gaskets. Are there supposed some between the housing and steel disc and steel ring with lip?
I tried adjusting the set screw in the back, with no luck. The back of the housing gets warm to the touch when several attempts are made to sound the horn.
I had this rebuilt and it tested perfect when I got it back using a 6 volt battery. That was about three years ago.

Removed horn from vehicle and bench tested using a 6v battery charger. Made adjustments to the screw on back. Aligned the post on the disc above the contacts. Horn is working using temporary horn button now.

Glad you got it working. The horns can be a problem if you don't know how they work or are adjusted.
