A few months ago we had a LONG thread about what to use on the outside of '49 - '54 tin woody wagons.

I recently got some decal (peel-and-stick)samples from an outfit called www.stripeman.com

I took a picture to show the comparison of the new stuff to the original stuff on my tailgate. It isn't an exact match, but it's the best I've found so far.

See what you think:

I missed the thread from a few months ago. What were the conclusions? Are you going to cut your own stencils or have them made up? Did you go with the cherry or oak? Are you planning on varnishing over these, once applied or are they supposed to indure the elements? I'm ready to do my woodgrain and am going to have to tackle it on my own. At Hershey, I saw some beautiful woodgraining, but at 3500. for starters for my 51, it is just a little out of my reach. (actually miles away!) Would be nice to get this outfit to make a run of 100 or so "kits" for the tin chevys and pontiacs....

Grand,

My plan is to cut my own. I'm told it can be a tedious and often unforgiving task. Really!?! Who'da thunk it? - a tedious and unforgiving car restoration task... :p

Even though this vinyl is designed for use on auto exterior, I will top coat it with something. I want a satin (not glossy) finish on the "wood" parts. Not sure what I'll put on it. I'm not going for a show car. I just want a "Hey, look at that woody!" effect as I drive by at 35 mph.

I had not considered approaching the company about making a kit. But I suspect there is not enough demand.

Hey DCMATT- I'm where you're at. My car will look nice, but isn't going to be perfect either> I never was a perfect kinda car guy. I want to drive the car and if the Maaco paint gets a scratch, so what! I just did my remade lower gate (52 Buick) in satin varnish. It looks awesome and is very forgiving. All of the rest of the wood is going to get stripped and go from gloss to satin. I guess I'm going to try "Painting" my 51 chev wood. This is going to be a challenge. If I mess up bad, I can always go over it with the decals. Would be great if there was a kit out there. I'll bet 50-100 could be sold, since the Pontiacs are also included and there are several years involved. ANyway, would like to see your car when the decals are in place. Thanks.
