I use 10W-30 in all my old Chevrolets. That includes 20s to 70s.

I use 10 W 30 also. I have a 37 and 52. If you have an older car that used non-detergent the pan should be taken off and cleaned. It will be full of sludge.

The bearings in all engines including todays have babbitt lined bearings. The rod dipper type engines are best luricated with 10W-30 oil as it is light like #10 when cold for fast circulation and medium like #30 when hot.

The original owners/shop manual calls for 20 weight oil. Also it is now recommended to use a zinc additive oil or buy a zinc additive for the 20 weight oil.

#20 oil hasn't been avaoable for years. 10W-30 covers all bases and was recommended by GM after it was introduced in 1954. There was no zinc in oils in 1950 and the amount of zinc found in todays 10W-30 is more than they ever dreamed of in 1950. The low load valve train of the 6 Cyl. engines puts little load on the old camshafts that never failed back then.
