Hello to you all from Australia,
I have a problem I hope someone can help me with.
My 48 and 47 Chevs both have the same problem with oil from the gearbox travelling from the box to the universal and thence to the differential.
When I was restoring each car, neither one had any type of seal inside the propeller shaft and not knowing any better, I didn't know whether one was needed or not.
The only reason I am now questioning the need for one is that I am now restoring a 29 Chev and today, whilst looking through Ebay, I stumbled across propeller shaft seal, among other things for sale. Looking at the 29 drive shaft, there is very little room to insert a seal and I assume the same is the case with the 47 &48 drive shafts. I can't check at the moment because neither is dismantled to have a look.
So my question is pretty obvious, is there a seal inside the drive shaft and if so where abouts?
This might be a pretty dumb question cause common sense tells you there must be some sort of barrier to prevent the oil running down the shaft, but I am at a loss.
Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

On the 1929 the seal is just behnd the single bshing.
On a 1947-48 it is behind the rear most bushing.

Unfortunately I just don't quite understand where you mean. I hate to show my ignorance, but what do you mean by the rear bushing, where is that?

On the 1947 and 48 there is a thin bushing at the front end of the torque tube that supports universal joint outside diameter. The rear bushing and seal supports the drive shaft behind the front spline area, about 5 to 6 inches behind the front end of the outer torque tube.

The repair for the 1929 front bushing and seal is to purchase a replacement from either Billy Possum or the filling station. It comes as a new one piece bushing and seal assembly, that uses a new unworn portion of the drive shaft.

If you do not have them, I would highly recommend you purchase the parts books and shop manuals for the years you have. They contain pictures of these things you are wondering about.
