Guys, I'm sure this has been discussed before however I'm not finding what I need. The wood screw that that hold the heavy metal plate to the front pillar on my 32 4 door. I want the slotted countersunk crown type I think. At the top of the plate there are two large head countersunk screws and I have no idea what to even ask for. Right now I have a temp. screw holding it until I finf what I need. Also the are two slotted bolt used in the lower hinges of the front and rear doors. Not to sure if this correct?? The lower hinges were never tapped for threads
in two of the three holes in the front hinges. I know this because I tapped one to confirm and it tapped fine.

Perhaps Master Carr has something.
Thank for any help guys....The last of the fit up is near then it's off to the body shop!

Did you look at McMaster-Carr's web site to see if they have what you need?

That's also a good source to learn the proper names of the various styles of screws and other hardware.

I've been buying some on e-bay. If you know their proper names you can get them at fair prices. Some with free shipping...Joe

Thanks guys! I did check out all those places and did not find a 1/4 - 20 3/1/2" long countersunk oval head straight slot bolt. I guess they are not made anymore. Bolts were used in the lower front hinges of my 32 sedan. 2 on each side.

I bought mine from a marine supply house. I think it was Jamestown. They may be stainless or nickeled but they will be painted.

You couldn't have looked at the Bolt Depot. That is where I buy those exact 1/4 x 20 oval slotted machine screws. Here's the exact page:

1/4-20 X 3 1/2" Slotted oval wood screw stainless Bolt Depot PN#5374 $1.80 ea.

#14 X 3" Slotted oval sheet metal screw " " " 14009 $1.80 ea

As for the wood screws, why not use a 3" sheet metal screw #14009? The last half inch should not make that much difference if the wood is solid. If the wood is so weak a 3" screw won't hold, a 3 1/2" screw won't do that much better. IIRC the OD and root diameter of the #14 sheet metal screw and 1/4 wood screws are within thousandths of each other. If the wood is weak you may have to treat it with GitRot, etc. If the screw hole is a little loose and you are afraid it won't bite, split a couple of thin oak shims, like toothpicks on steroids, slather them with Liquid Nails or flooring glue. Place them in the hole and tighten the screws.

CORRECTION: Should read: Slotted Oval MACHINE screw 1/4-20 X 3 1/2" PN 5374 S1.80 ea.

Sorry for not proofreading and correcting my post before submitting.

Thanks Guys,

The problem is I did not look a machine screws. Go figure, in my world there are bolts and screws. So I'm never to old to stop learning. Thanks for the help and by the way all the wood is new. This is the reason for the bolt and screw size questions. I had nothing to go by.

The work continues..
