You have the wrong water pump! Do not use on the '35 chevy. Each year like '34, '35, 36 was different because Chevy was working on the over heating problem. Each year brought so called "improvements". Water pumps can be bought over the internet at The Filling Station...www.fillingstation.com New Old Stock ones or you can send yours into to be re-built. There are other vendors who "sell" these too. But it must be a 1935 pump.

If the leak was around the shaft... it may be solved by tighten the packing nut on the shaft. If the packing nut is all the way in (all the way tight on the shaft) If it still leaks, you can add more packing (purchase at The Filling Station). If it still leaks then must be re-built.

I have a '35 Chevy Std coupe w/207 engine, and the pump looks
like the larger one in your picture. If the coolant is leaking
at the shaft around the packing nut, you can replace or add
some packing without having to remove the pump. I did on my
car in about 20 minutes! Get the correct size wrench (it's
either 15/16" or 1 inch; memory is a little fuzzy!) Loosen the
packing nut and slide all the way forward on the shaft, then,
using a 'dental pick' or small screw driver, carefully work the new packing into the housing. Now you can re-install the
packing nut and snug it up appropriately and stop the leak!
The packing is round to fit the shaft, but it is split diagonally for ease of installation!

The 1935 water pump is a one year only pump.
You can tighten the packing nut and that will stop the leak unless the packing is "used-up". In that case the packing nut can be loosened up and new packings installed as per shop manual.

The new pump on the left appears to be for a 1929-34 Chevrolet.
