I just received the Hampton Coach top kit for my '33 Master Coach. It contains the grained top material which I associate with earlier models. I do not remember my original top replaced in '64 but the top shop used convertible top material which was smooth. No one ever questioned it. What is correct for the '33 and I suppose on to '36 Std. top material, smooth or grained?

I ASSOCIATE THE GRAINED TOP MATERIAL WITH MODEL A & t FORDS .

IT USED TO BE ON MY 35 STD COUPE AND I REPLACED IT ABOUT 10 YEARS AGO WITH HARTZ CANVAS IN BLACK, FROM THE OTHER HALF OF HAMPTON COACH.............LEBARON-BONNEY.

NOT SURE WHAT IS CORRECT, BOUGHT WHAT I LIKED.

The top insert material on my all original 1932 Special Sedan is a fine grained leatherette.

Lebaron Bonney will supply you with top material small samples if you ask them for them.

Hampton coach for Chevrolets is pretty well interior stuff, not sure about tops.

Thanks all for the input. Before this subject dies I will share with everyone what I found on the Haartz website.

“In addition to the soft-topping embossings noted, there were other grains used for deck and roof cover fabrics for pre-1940 closed cars.…… (Incidentally, the Tuxedo grain, also known as Box grain, saw use on deck fabric for GM-Fisher Body and Packard cars in the 1930s.)
Unfortunately for the restorer, these grains were not standardized through the industry, nor did users of the coated fabrics exercise care in the terminology, especially in the times before 1950. Even fairly common grains could vary either among sources of embossing tooling, among makers of the resultant coated-fabrics and among leather companies, who also used similar embossing technology.”

It is an informative website I would highly recommend. Per their website, deck fabric is the fabric used on closed car tops.

So I will go with the material supplied by Lebaron Bonney in their kit TK-3 but the underlay supplied seems a bit thin compared to the original. I will work that out with the installer.
