Turn off all lights, radio and anything that might be damaged by high voltage. The starter and ignition system will be okay as long as the time is short. Try to put the 12 volts as close to starter as practical and only for the time needed to get the engine started. Often it takes two people to do it right. Of course make sure the jumper is hooked + to + and - to - or it will look like the 4th of July.

Decided to disconnect the battery completly and charge the battery that way. Watching the voltage on the battery. Worked ok.
