When I did mine I heated the ring with an oxy-acetylene torch and it fell off with a couple taps. When putting it together I set the flywheel in a freezer over night then heated the ring again with the torch and it slipped together with no force at all needed, in fact it was too loose and I had to wait a couple minutes for the ring to contact the flywheel again. Mine still looks like one single piece. Try heating just your ring, give it couple good taps and see how it reacts. It has to be pretty hot for the ring to expand enough to separate itself. It only takes a couple minutes and it will answer your question.
