Yes, pulling the oil pan off is a good idea. Gives you the opportunity to inspect the bottom end and clean out sludge.
I highly suggest you get a 1929 shop manual. It will have a complete description of the engine oil system and will talk about shims. If there are shims left, then you can take them out (if necessary) to adjust the main and rod bearing clearance gaps.
