Going 'way back into a dark and mysterious corner of my memory, I seem to recall finding those things stuffed down in between the rear inner and outer fenders, 2 to a side, on a '51 that Dad owned and I started driving and tinkering with in '59. Why they were there I have no idea.

OK, Gene, please clue me in. Were those pieces there as a primitive means of soundproofing, or to soak up any moisture that happened to find its way there, or ???

possibly both....I have not found those on my current styleline deluxe but I seem to recall them on the original car back when I was in high school in the 80's.

The pads were in most of the cars, especially the Deluxe models. It was for elemination of road noise.

On my 1950 Styleline Deluxe, when you open my trunk and look next to the hinges I have what looks like your picture running to the inside fender wall on both sides.
