Hi all,
I am looking at a 2000 S-10 2WD with a 4.3 engine, automatic tranny, extended cab tomorrow.
Is there anything specific I should look or lookout for? Please help.
Joe

Rust would be the first thing. Mecanically they has fuel injector problems ,fuel pump prblems, and distributor problems. If it runs out OK they have probably been fixed.

If it is a 4 wheel drive besure to keep the ball joints well lubricated if they have grease fittings on them.

Joe, I have a 2003 S10 extreme extended cab with 4.3, just hit 120,000 km's or about 90,000 miles. Mine is totally rust free as it gets treated 2 times a year with Crown Rust Control. The $125 charge is cheaper than replacing or repairing rust. Last winter was its first being driven in the winter, usually just sat in driveway or in garage .

Ones I see with rust 1998---2003 body style , are heavy around rear of cab corners, bottom of doors, bottom of front fender, bottom of tailgate, around wheelwell on bed.

Its got a very long 2 piece driveshaft and you use special needle tip type fittings to grease the U-joints on the driveshaft. If you don't be prepared for a large hit to your wallet. All other front end stuff gets greased every oil-filter change.

If your even remotely thinking about driving it in the winter you will need 300 pounds directly over the rear wheels and snow tires , otherwise it will not move on flat ground.

The 4.3 is a dog at 180 hp and cannot get out of its own way and gas mileage is brutal !!!!!!!!. Use a bottle of fuel injection cleaner in the tank every fill up to keep the injectors flowing and better mileage. Lately I have been considering installing a chev v8 , the new LS series 327.

Thank you. See seems pretty peppy for a 4.3. The truck is clean underneath so a preservative would be in order.
I bought her well below blue book and because it was the nicest one I could find locally. So we will see how she holds up. All of your advise is appreciated.

My son had an Astro Van with that engine. Good power, fair gas milage.
Fuel injector cleaner is really not necessary because it does not have poppet type injectors. They used a strange center F.I. injector with tubes runing to each intake port.

When I bought the S10 2003 extreme 4.3 two years old, was a complete dog performance wise, would not even burn rubber on a brake stand. Repeated STP fuel injection cleaner every tank full sorted that out over a month. The 4.3 at factory rated 180hp will not scare anybody, nor the driver.

Running special goodyear "fuel max" mileage tires at 35 pounds recommended gets better mileage on long trips, but the extreme package makes it ride like a dump truck unless 300 pounds is carried over rear axle. Otherwise you will initiate so many rattles and squeaks you need a very powerful stereo to block out the rattles . Ya got that too.

I am happy so far tooling around town in my "half a truck". It is pretty peppy for what it is. Mike, the center shaft grease fitting was dry as a bone! Thanks. My friend/mechanic put plugs and wires on her. It made quite a difference. No one warned me about how hard the plugs on the driver side are! But it's done. She is a little noisy when I start her cold but quiets down very quickly. Up on the lift the under carriage is in great condition. All good!

Joe, oil spraying or crown rust control is worth every cent you spend having it done---$100---140 around here. Preventative coating is a must when dealing with new England or Canadian winter weather.

Front & rear and center hanger greasing are a must with this long driveshaft will save $400--500 getting it repaired. Tie rod ends and ball joints need regular greasing.

Try some STP fuel injection cleaner 3--4 times to get the injectors to MIST rather than piss fuel, will really help with the mileage per tank, did for me.

Don't forget the points and condenser and distributor cap. My car 2003 just broke 120,000 km or 75,000 miles so have not done cap of distributor yet.
