That's pretty much the set up. The foam weather strip is covered in a material to match the interior color of the truck and is supposed to clamp behind the trim pieces around the edge of the door all the way around the door, as Mike describes, actually switching from the door to the body about halfway around the hinge side top of the door from approximately the halfway pint of the side of the windshield. In so doing, the weather strip will not get caught in the closed door and stays inside the cab to function as weather strip down the front side of the door to the floor of the cab.
However, I found out that it is almost impossible to get that weather strip to hold behind the narrow metal trim piece tight enough to function as a true weather strip. I finally found some thick material - like a vinyl upholstery material, doubled and sewed the weather strip flange to it and then placed it behind the door edge strip. The vinyl was thick enough to stay in place and function as a weather strip flange to hold the weather strip in place. This probably is not the way it was originally done from the factory, but the original way is either not known (by me) or, if used in it's original form, did not function correctly or cannot be made to function correctly by me.
