I'm not much of a transmission person but when I shift my 54 into 2nd she kind of makes a grungle like noise. 2nd to third is fine but back to 2nd it does it again. Could this be a linkage adjustment? She shifts out fine otherwise. Any ideas?

If you double declutch it, equalizing the revs, the noise disappears? If so the problem may be the 2nd gear syncro.

Yea, I thought that might be it. I have not tried the double cluch yet but I will soon. Is that an expensive fix? I will have to have that done someplace. Not a tranny guy at all. Thanks for the info. Also, anyone know how to get the gauges out of this car. Do I have to pull the nuts off from the back?

First thing I would do is check the adjustment on the two shift levers and the shift gate per the manual.

Agree completely with Glyn. Do you have the workshop manual? Not so hard to dismantle the box, a very simple Saginaw design. Maybe a additive like Redline, new oil...

First thing to check is the oil level in trans.
If you need a new syncro I can help.

Hey thanks for the input. I will check on those things as soon as I'm done replacing the ignition wiring. Last night some faulty wiring burnt up all the way from the ignition to the gauges back to the coil. I will try to fix it this week end and then check back in on the tranny.

By the way mahalet, I do not have a shop manual yet. Is there one in specific you all could recommend to me?

Hi Big:
Look on ebay, in chevrolet or chevy 51, for the GM manual. The best 20 bucks you will ever spend.
Or look for Captain Hardy site, where there is everything from even more factory manuals. May the Lord make his sailing smooth and bless him for his effort and expenses.

All of the parts houses selling reproduction parts have reproduction manuals, as Mahalet said it is the best 20 bucks you will ever spend. I keep mine in the trunk of the car, the computer site with the manuals is great but you cannot take it with you! check this site out

Double clutching is not a part or something you have put into a tranny!........

My wife had a good laugh at the expense of double-clutching.

Wow, thanks for all the input guys. I just got her back on the road yesterday and she purrs like a kitten. I tried the double clutch bit but it still makes noise. I did notice that if I take my time and sorta ease the shifter in a few times the noise is a lot less. Still, if its the syncro she will probably have to wait till the spring. I may just yank the tranny after checking in to it some more and have a professional do the work. I will certainly be picking up one of those manuals though. Thanks again, you guys are great!
