Hi All, Does anyone have any information on when Chevrolet painted the letters white on the stepside pickup Tailgate? Thanks Rooney3100

Hi Gene, that's what I wanted to find out, what was the first year Chevrolet painted the letters white on the stepside raised letter tailgates. Thanks. Steve M.

Jim Carter Truck Parts catalog has a 1934-46 Truck Trivia section. It states that 1939-1940 Chevy trucks (1/2 and 3/4 ton) had script style tailgate lettering. The other years between 1934-46 had plain tailgates with no letters. GMC trucks did use their logo from 1936-46.
Someone else will need to add info for the years prior to 1934 and after 1946.

Steve, I have some gaps in my information. The 1958 was not painted and the 1961 was. My GUESS is the 1960 probably had the letters painted. I will continue searching.

Steve, I have some gaps in my information. The 1958 was not painted and the 1961 was. My GUESS is the 1960 probably had the letters painted. I will continue searching. Gene, I read somewhere when I was restoring my 1956 that the raised letters were painted starting with that year, I just wanted to have clarification. I have white letters on my tailgate and I was told that they were not white until the 60's. I can't find any info in my litiature.
