I see all the time that .. say 41 pickups are listed as long bed or short bed.

It is my understanding the short beds (6ft) are on the 1/2 ton and that the long beds (8ft) are on the 3/4 ton.

If that is so for all pickups in the thirties and the forties and fifties, why isn't the length of the bed simply understoon without any comment?

To your "it is My understanding" remark.
Yes, the 1/2 tons were short and 3/4 and 1 tons long.

From 1936-1954 GMC did indeed have a long bed 1/2 ton available. Chevrolet did not.

BTW:I reviewed my initial post and no where did I mention that it was Chevrolet pickups I was writing about even though it was. Accordingly, your mention about the GMC was well taken.

I think the first long bed 1/2 ton Chevy was the 3200 in '55 second series.
Some observers are confused by the fact that 3/4 and 1 ton trucks from the beginning (1937) through at least 1941 used 6 bolt wheels. To the untrained, 6 bolt means 1/2 ton, 8 bolt means 3/4-1 ton.
