If the negative braided cable hits the metal battery hold down tray on top of the battery is this a problem? We just bought a new 6 volt battery and it is shorter than the old one causing the cable to be closer to the hold down . thanks!

Thanks! My power seat did not move back, only forward. I took the switch out and cleaned the 3 pins. It works fine now. With the battery run down the power window on the drivers door was dead. It may be something else but as soon as I put the new battery in it worked. I think I need to have the generator rebuilt as it is original and may not be charging too good.

A word from long experience with '54 Powerglide engines....Have the original generator and starter rebuilt. Don't exchange them. Especially the starter which is a heavy duty unit to start the PG engine. Take them to a shop that specializes in old units...

Hey Alan, Be sure and use heavy duty battery cables!! JYD uses 0000 (#4/0) welding cable, so that says a lot.

One thing that bothers me is the statement "the new battery is shorter" does that mean then that the case size is smaller and the battery rating is also smaller. Could lead to problems if the cable size is not correct. I use 01 my self and find it adequate.

That battery will not "cut the mustard" with a PG engine.

Yes it is... What battery do I need to buy. I looked on the Interstate site and this is what it gave me for my car.

I think Ray is referring to "cutting the mustard" when it is below zero degrees farenheit in Rockland County, NY. We had a 1952 Chev with PG and starting was not a problem. At that time we were lucky to have any battery. I'd keep the new Interstate battery you have!

Bob's words are wise. Along the lines of "if it ain't broke, don't fix it."
Oft times the 'extremes' are used as the 'measurement.' Of course, if you encounter the 'extremes' then it would be prudent to have the best available.
I use the Delco 413-A which many guys in here refer to a "junk." (I like 'em in the 54's cuz they look like they belong there. As opposed to an "Interstate" or "Napa" or whatever 'off-brand' battery that DOESN'T look like it belongs there.) As I recall the 413 CCA's are right about 600. They seem to work just fine in my '54 PG. However, I do have 'high torque fields' in the starter. That's what really made the 'difference' for me.
Bill.

Hey 42bill, You hit it on the head!!! A good starter is worth far more than a couple of extra CCA's. BigBob...
