I just got my 1946 Chevy done. I pulled the rearend and 235 out of a 1954, but I rebuilt the original transmission. The car runs great but slips out of 3rd gear on the highway unless I keep my hand on the stick shift. I tried adjusting the linkage but nothing has worked. I was told it could need a vacuum advance installed. I was thinking of just adding a spring to the lever under the car to add tension. Any thoughts on a good fix or do I have a bigger problem on my hands? Thanks!

I don't think they meant a vacuum advance. That is on the distributor. Think they meant vacuum assist for the linkage on the transmission. Do you have a service manual it shows the vacuum assist. They have been removed on alot of these cars and replaced with mechanical linkage.
