Alan, Great looking car.One of the better ones that you have come up with.

Just a note-it has a 1959-62 engine which ain"t all that bad. :) :)Or at least the head and valve cover.

What does this do to the value if the engine is not correct?

An incorrect engine ,as long as its a 235 should not hurt the value unless you go for VCCA judging.

The most obvious thing is the valve cover. The 1954 valve cover has the oil filler up towards the front and has little vent holes in the ridges on top. Also uses the low ,non breather type oil filler cap.The breather type cap was used when the vents were eleminated. The 1954 head had the coil mounted in the center and the coil wire faced down.

What is the casting number on the lower right side of the block??

I did send you a PM in response to your PM query

This looks to me like very nice tourer, In my estimation for a nice 4 door sedan that is intended to be driven.... the newer engine is a big plus! (Everyone isn't into VCCA Judging), YET!

And, if you are into VCCA judging, it is okay to have the wrong year engine anyway as long as the engine has the same cubic inches as the original engine. :( :( :(

Hopefully that may change

The engine number is correct for a 1954 PG...but can easily be restamped. The casting number would be a better indication.Should be 3835911,3733949 or 3701481 from my info.

Skippy,

Your post that the 'wrong year engine is OK' is contradictory to my info about judging.

Seems Allen's engine is a Flint 1954 Powerglide engine anyway with possible wrong head and for sure wrong (later) valve cover. I believe Gene's explanation of valve cover is very good - easy to understand and further, it's right on. Nothing new for Gene to be 'right on.'

Bill.

Ya, I know....but that's the way it is with the new judging rule. For more information you might want to go back and check out some past threads here on Chevy Chatter about the new rule regarding the "wrong engine", or check out the article by Steve Scott regarding this rule in the May, 2003 issue of the G&D. wink laugh laugh laugh

That's a very nice '54 Alan! yipp
