I just acquired a 1927 Chevrolet Capitol. The distributor is out of the car, what are correct steps to reinstalling and setting timing. From what I have been told its a 1927 engine with a 1928 head.

PLEASE HELP.

Hey Drlowz,

Welcome! This is the best place to hob knob with old Chevy kindred souls! I highly suggest you join the VCCA because you'll gain access LOTS of resources, meet great people, and get a first-rate monthly magazine.

And, congrats on the '27. It is very common to see these with a '28 head on the engine.

The first thing to do is to get a copy of the shop manual. They are offered by many vendors and also on ebay. The shop manual has a lot of detailed information.

One of the great resources you can get if you join the club, is to access a 200+ page writeup by Ray Holland on a '28 engine rebuild. Besides being a great entertaining read, most of the information in that document are relevant to your engine.

Cheers, Dean

Also it still has the 27 carb on it, but an old guy said it should have a 28 carb on it.

Howdy again,

Here's a link to a page with info about joining the club: http://vcca.org/application_to_join.htm

When you get your VCCA number, put it in your profile and then the VCCA magic elves will grant you access to the members-only part of the site. luv2

Regarding the question about whether your engine should have a '27 or a '28 carb, that depends on information that you'll learn from your research. Answers to questions like, what is your vision for your car, how authentic do you want it, what are the differences between the two carbs, do you want a driver or a show vehicle, some of both, etcetera.

Opinions are like belly buttons, everybody's got one and there are a lot of differences. Ultimatly the bottom line is what is important to you. As you learn more about Chevys of the era and your car in particular, you'll figure this out.

Enjoy the journey! It is a wonderful, winding road.

Cheers, Dean

Here are a couple of threads that you might find interesting. They discuss projects that sat for years. Each thread offers some ideas about how to approach the project:
