I always come across some strange stuff with this car. The previous owner has done some serious hack work throughout this whole car, so today I noticed that the 4 bolts at the back of the transmission that hold the cover over the u joints were not tightened all the way, so I tightened them up as it should be and the car will not move. If I back the bolts out I am able to move the car. I really didn't start to explore what's going on with this, but did noticed that when test driving after about 15 min or so it seems like the trans slips in 2nd gear, but mostly in 3 gear when I accelerate, when I let up on the gas it seems to catch and works some what normal. Any ideas what may be going on, what I should be looking for when I start this next phase to make this work as it should? Also I noticed that the trans had hardly any fluid in it so I filled it to where it should be. Everything I go to fix on this car turns out to be a major, expensive ordeal. If anyone has any ideas what's going on please fill me in. Thanks in advance, Ken

the "cover over the U joint" is adjusted by adding shims under it. The shims look like extra gaskets. The proper adjustment is when the ball can be moved up and down with a lottle effort (when the U joint is not installed). If you add shims with every thing connected you can cut the shim. placing the "cut" on top and add shims until the ball (rear slim part) can be rotated with a little effort.....with a pipe wrench or largw Channel=loc pliers.
If the tras. continues to jump out of gear first check the shifter forks for wear. Can be done by removing trans. top cover. If that area is OK the trans. needs work.
Good Luck Ken

Sounds like the clutch may be slipping.

I should have said see shop manual for all details. Also the bolt that holds the front half of the U joint to the back end of the transmission shaft may be missing......Probably should remove the U joint and inspect for bad things.

Thanks, Gene, Steve,& Chevy 1937 for giving me a better idea what may be going on. I am going to try to get a little more involved with it this coming weekend, Hopefully.
You make mention that the clutch is slipping, I know we all heard that phrase before, but What exactly is happening? What is happening out of the norm? How would it be fixed, Is it adjusting something, replacing something, or both, or just over hauling the whole transmission? Would it be better just try to find another Trans/clutch that works good?
Gene, I'll check to see if there are any missing parts or bolts, or excessive where on the shifting forks. Hope all is there. Ill keep in touch and let you know what I find. Thanks again, Ken

Your first step should be to do as Gene suggested above and that is to follow the steps in the shop manual. It will guide you on how to inspect and adjust the clutch or replace if necessary.
