I have been trying to find the correct answer for some time how to install the convertible top well liner correctly. The supplier I bought the liner from, did not supply instructions, and the verbal procedure I received from them didn't seem right.

Some have told me to just glue it to the floor of the well and the back wall, some have said there was a piece of wood hooked along the back metal wall under the top material, and the front part of the liner attached either to the floor of the well, or the back of the seat with another piece of wood. There are holes along the back wall of the well which seems something was back there at one time. On yeah, someone else told me the well liner material goes under the screws which hold down the back bottom edge of the convertible top to the rear edge of the well frame.

Can ANYONE help me to get this right, and even point me to where I might find the attaching hardware or what hardware is actually needed.

Thanks for any and all input.

R50Chevy

PS, I'll attach pictures of the well, once I figure out how to upload on this site.

Are there any convertible owners out there who may have any insight which could help me restore the well liner correctly? Anyone have a well liner in their convertible in the world other than Mr, Brewster the neighbor across the border to my north?

Thanks for any input

It's going to be a tough answer to find. It'll have to be someone that actually taken the top apart to figure out how it's all been attached underneath. I've sent a couple feelers out for you to other '49-'52 owners that I know, but have not received any replies that will help you.

Does anyone know if 1951-'54 convertibles have the same well liner as the 1950?

Bruce, do you think a Fisher Body manual would be of assistance ? I don't know the answer, just asking you.

Keith Hardy's site only has a 1949 Fisher body manual. The tops are slightly different in how they attach to the belt line on a '49 and a '50, so I'm not sure about the well liner. I didn't see any pictures of the well liner, although there is one good one of just the well in bare metal...

The top picture is what the well compartment looks like sans soft vinyl material.
Appreciate you reaching out for me Brew to any other 49-51 convertible owners.

The well is made from heavy canvas like what is used for the top material and the same color as the top.

Wow Gene, you're the first person I've heard say that. I looked all over the Internet and vendor showed only black vinyl liners. I'm sure I could have the same company who manufacturer my white convertible top also make me a liner.

Thanks for that piece of the puzzle.

My 51 conv. I'd buried in the corner of the garage with all the other cars when I get it out in a couple weeks I could take pictures but it will be a while

Would love that. Not only to see the well liner installation, but also to see the car.

Mike, The well liner in my 50 convertible is made from several different pieces, some sewn, others glued to cardboard backer, that were installed in a certain sequence to get complete coverage with no unfinished edges. Although I haven't had the rear seat out in years, it looks like the front of the well liner goes over the top of the seat back body support. I didn't look too closely at how the rear edges of the liner pieces terminate but can look again. I do seem to recall a few finish screws along that top edge however. I sent you a PM with contact information. Mike

Mike,

Great info. That makes sense to me, having the front edge go over the seat back bar. Would love to know how the sides and back are connected to the well frame. Especially the back edge. If you could take a picture or two and post it would help me and maybe others now or in the future who can't figure out the proper installation. Or if it's easier email me, or just take a look and describe what you see, that would be fantastic. By the way, what color is your convertible top, and the well liner? Are both white? And since I'm asking a lot of questions, last one, what color is your 50 convertible?

Thanks a lot.
