When I fill the tank on my 31 coupe gas leaks out of the filler neck. I don't fill the tank all the way, and I've added a rubber gasket to the cap. Any suggestions?
Thanks,
Sid

My friend you are sitting on a bomb,If you don't get that leak fixed. Your tank may also have pinhole leaks from rust.

Gas cap is a reproduction from filling station and is vented. It had a cork gasket. Maybe 2 cork gaskets would be better than rubber. Gas tank is an original in very good shape with no pinholes. It came with the car.

jmm is right, we rebuilt a house where the gas tank leaked & set the house afire. If that happens you can kiss your car good by.

If you fill the tank with cold gas, then it warms up & expands out of the tank, the fumes are dangerous.
Good luck

I believe the gas is sloshing out between the cap and filler neck. It didn't have time to heat up in the 2 miles from gas station to my house.

If you fill those tanks to the top they will push gas out when heated or slosh it out. Best to leave a noticeable gap between filler pipe and liquid level. That will give you ~ 10 gal. capacity instead of the 11 listed.

You can put a leather gasket in the cap. Cork will work if everything is smooth. Otherwise any roughness on the filler neck will abrade the gasket. Rubber that is compatible with gasoline is not generally to spiffy with alcohol. The best with gasoline are Nitrile, Viton, Polyurethane.

I had a similar problem with my 32 and the replacement vented non original style cap with a rubber gasket solved the problem. Check the top of the flange on the filler neck also and when the cap is installed it needs to be snug. If necessary a thicker gasket or double up.

Sid. some gas station drives lean out to fill tanks with more gas then, if your floor leans in the tank is too full.
I went to our gas station pump company & bought their gas gasket material for my fuel pump diaphragm . it is a lot better stuff then what you get when you order it. My fuel pump last a lot longer cut your own diaphragm out & punch out the holes.
buy about a sq. foot for $5.00.

I would not use leather. Find some rubber that can hold up to the gas.
