Is this oiled from the transmission or does it have its own oil? I suppose, checking this requires the removal of the floorboards to get to that plug.

It is automatically oiled from the transmission. It does not drain when you drain the trans. to change the gear oil.
If it is "enpty" from disassembly it will slowly refill or can be refilled by removing the plug.
The oil in that locaton lubricates the U joint.
