Hello, What kind of original antenna does a 38 Chevy have. Running board type or cowl mounted. Also does any one sell them.

Someone will correct me if I'm wrong but I believe the only "stock" antennas were the turret top and the running board antennas. I'm not aware of anyone reproducing them. Turret Top 1 Turret Top 2

Correct. The 1939 was the first to have a cowl antenna.

Was that 39 antenna on the driver's side or the passenger's side?

I've seen them mounted both ways but mostly on the driver's side. I mounted mine on the driver's side.

All Chevrolet passenger cars had the cowl antenna mounted on the left side - until 1955.

If the Turret top antenna's were stock how come we don't see many around? I think I've seen 3 in my 40 years of playing around with the 38's! Same with the running board antennas….although understandably they were more prone to damage and rust-away from road trash and salt….same goes for the Town and Country horns….if money was tight back then why does almost every 38 have T & C horns? Makes no sense….Billu38

The turret top antennas were never popular, even when new. I guess they looked too wild for the conseritive Chevrolet buyer.. Also ther antenna prevented owners from mounting top carriers on the roof which were frequently used years ago. The running board antennas were common but mant were replaced with a cowl antenna as the cars got older and the running board antennas when to pot.
The dual horns were fairly commom and you see so many today as they were often removed from the cars before they went to the junk yard.
Other accessories that were seldom found on 1937-1939 cars were the fender lights, fender skirts, more than one fog light, and white wall tires.

I have an original turret top antenna, in its original container hanging on the wall in my shop, it does not have a part number but looks identical to the one Tiny posted. Could it be a 1937-38 model?

The 1939 accessory book lists the antenna, accessory number 985462, as fitting 1937-1939 cars. Packaging is described as "one antenna with condenser, and all attaching parts, is packed in a shipping carton which also can be used for displaying this antenna"

A special condenser for sealing supports to roof and a condenser for compensating the use of this antenna was included in the package.

I would think drilling holes in the roof gave doubts of the use of this antenna also.

So I would guess this required the partial removal of the headlining. What a nightmare of an installation job.

Just a guess since I've never seen one but it looks like it might mount where the dome light is. Maybe dropping the dome light gives access to the area??

In reading the antenna installation directions I found the special cement that comes with the unit is used to "glue" the antenna to the roof.

The one I have has a tube of glue mounted on the display board, of course the glue is dried up after many years of display.

Ok, I'm confused. What type of antenna does Tiny have mounted on his driver side? What is that called? I thought that style is most common. Shows how much I know.

He has a cowl antenna....not really correct for a 1938 but found on many 1937 and 1938 cars for several reasons.
Main reasons the cars did not have a radio or antenna installed in 1938 and if they did and was of the under running board type a cowl antenna was installed when the R.B. type fell off.

Thank you, that is the way I'm going to go. My 38 is not original so I can't mess it up plus the cowl style is more convenient and readily available. I notice some people put "Red Ball" cowl antennas on there 30's Chevrolets. Thought I suspect they are not original, does anyone know when the red ball antennas came out?

I wonder if the cowl antenna that they sell for the Chev pickups of is the same design in the reproduction antennas.

The original Chevrolet cowl antennas had a red ball on top.
