I'm replacing the splash pan on the front of my 46 fleetmaster and have taken the bumper brackets off to drop the two pans. The book I'm looking at for taking the grill off is for a different year. I don't want to just start tearing out things I don't need to. My question is how do I take the grill out in one piece so I can drop the pan? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

From the exploded picture of the 1946 grille it looks like removing the bumper is all that is necessary

Do you have a copy of the picture of the exploded view? The bumper and the brackets had to come off first so the pan could drop down and pulled out. The pan is riveted to the pan behind so they both have to come out to drill out the rivets and replace the front pan. I just can't really see what has to come off the back side of the grille itself to get it off. Thanks

from what i remember on my 48 fleetline, the pan had bolts under it attaching it to the grill, and a couple of bolts attaching the pan to the front fenders.

There are 3 bolts at each of the pan that bolt it to each fender. There are 6-8 (can't remember exact number) bolting the pan to the bottom of the grill.

On the pan behind the grill there is a tab on each side of the radiator support that is between the support and the splash panels that bolt to the radiator support. You'll have to remove the bottom bolts on each side and MAYBE loosen the others to get it out. There are another 4-5 bolts along each edge of the edge of the pan bolting it to the splash panels.

You shouldn't have to remove the grill but if you do being a contortionist would help but since you're probably not, it's easier to take off the front wheels to access the bolts on the backside of each fender. Then there are four screws that fasten the hood latch panel to the top of the grill and one bolt that bolts to the center grill support. There are also some bolts holding the parking lights to the fenders accessible from the back side of the fender. The grill can then be removed as one piece.
