Just got this rear-end today fresh off a farm, buried under dirt, barbed wire, stove pipes and assorted other "collectibles". Not sure exactly what it is off of just yet but am planning to clean it up and look closer at it in a couple days.

You may be right. This guy is a mechanic and engine builder of the vintage F--ds. My dad - the man standing on the ground - knows him from the Model A Club they both attend. The PO - man on the tractor - said he thought it was from a '23 or '24 Chevy. He remembers him and his brother riding a "rolling chassis" down a long hill then pulling it back to the top with a tractor some 60 years ago when they were both kids. The memory bought a smile to his face and a chuckle to his voice as he told us this adventure of his childhood. Looking around the old farm as we loaded this into my truck I could almost see the two young boys barreling, half out of control, toward the bottom of the hill we now stood at so many years later.

I have had my project Chevy less than a year but I am learning every day how this has become a life long passion for so many.

If you answer a couple of questions it will help in the identification. Does it have 5 or 6 lug wheels? Longitudinal or transverse springs? I tried to tell from the photos but was just not sure.

Hi Chipper,
The has the longitudinal quarter elliptical leaf springs that terminate right at the axle housing. These don't appear to be the proper wheels but I will be able to tell more as I take it apart. Also, it has 6 lugs on each side.

It is likely a Chevy. Definitely not Ford as they had transverse springs and if lugs only 5 not 6.

I don't think any Ford rear axle ever looked like that. It would have to be pre T. I think the quarter elliptic springs kills it for any Ford application.
I'm guessing the rear wheels are welded on to a wood wheel hub.
