Late to the topic and dumbing it down for us less knowledgeable, the grommets referred to are on the shaft of the trumpet at the front bracket, right? Does that mean that the trumpet will unscrew with some effort? What remains of my grommets only slightly resemble rubber, but initial efforts so far indicate that separation is not imminent.

The gromets are used where you indiacted. The trumpets "un-screw" but I think it is not worth the risk of damaging something in the process. Cutting and cementing is a safer process.

The trumpets unscrew at the vibrator housing. I can't speak for every year but the horns on my '38 have a hex shape formed in the shaft of the bell that allows you to use a wrench to unscrew them. Mine came out fairly easily. The grommets I bought from a vendor for my horns are nearly worthless. I don't remember whether I bought them from The Filling Station or Chevs of the 40s. The rubber compound is so soft that the vibration of the horn bells can cut through them. They also won't stay in place. Wasted money. Unfortunately the grommets you buy at the hardware store don't look anything like the OEM grommets. The picture below shows my horns in varying stages of cleaning & painting. You can see of the the bells is unscrewed. ![[Linked Image from i47.photobucket.com]](http://i47.photobucket.com/albums/f167/Tinys1938/IM000916.jpg)

I will post pics of mine disassembled also. Mine came apart easily and I ordered the grommets from chevofthe40s( didn't see them available at The Filling Station). Maybe I will install a teflon sleeve between the grommet and the horn, who knows haven't seen them yet. -I will be asking for help with my air breather next. My breather has dent in it and it does not seem accessible to push the dent out. What do I put to filter where a kind of mesh is currently? Michael 38 Town Sedan

Can you post the diameter of the bell and of the throat of the trumpet part. I've seen variations and would like to know what you have.
Thanks, Brian

I finally got to measure the horns I have. The bell on the 1937 horns is 4 inches across. The tube is about 3/4" The bell on the 1939 horns is 5 inces and the tube 1". From my experiance the 1938 tube is the same size as a 1937 and the bell the same as a 1938.

I need to prep for painting. I do not have bead blaster and I don't want to use a non-biodegradable gel/liquid like jasco. If there is a paint remover that i can pour down the drain or in the gutter that is desired. California is very strict and I do not want to pollute the water table. -Any suggestions based on current needs? Thank you Michael
P.S. I might take it to a paint shop to strip and maybe paint. -A friend recommend powder coating, but am on a budget

This is the correct horn grommets for 1939. http://www.steelerubber.com/horn-trumpet-grommet-70-1200-21Steele are listing them for Auburn and Cadillac only, but fit perfect for 1939 Chebrolet with 1" trumpet shaft. Steele sell them as pair, at Filling and Chevs of the Forties, you get only one for the same price.
