My friend and I soaked/cleaned and rebuilt my Carder carb. I put it back on the 1947 Fleetmaster (29,000 mi. one family owned and stored in a shed since 1969). After priming the carb. it runs and idles very good, however when I accelerate it will spit back through the carburetor. Now what should I check going from easiest to more involved things to check. 1. carburetor...I have not adjusted any screws anywhere on the carb. 2. vacuum advance what is the easiest what to check? Someone else will need to fill in the next steps because I am a novice mechanic. Thanks in advance for your input. rsh47

There are two critical parts to get properly installed and aligned. First is the nozzle. That is the piece(s) that fit into the angled passage and extend into the air horn. The flat spot needs to fit into the "D" shaped hole in the air horn. The other is the metering rod. The link needs to be properly bent so the throttle plate position is coordinated with the metering rod. The pivot pin bottom should be 2.795" above the main jet. Takes a tapered end gauge to get it set correctly. There are several possible causes but those are by far the most prevalent with inexperienced rebuilders.

Could be the accelerator pump. With engine not running, look down in carb and pull the throttle open. there should be a good spray of gas.

Do the following also: a. Check the timing. b. Check real close and make absolutely sure that the car is not really a Fleetline masquerading as a Fleetmaster. Fleetlines are temperamental and must be pampered. They will not take no abuse or no negative thinking by those who own them. They are like a baby a-spitting back its pabulum or strained broccoli. Also, they don't want no stinkin Fulton on them. If you have one on it take it off and the car will run better. Guaranteed. You will notice that none of the Fleetline gang has bothered to chime in on your post. Go figure. You're welcome. Charlie

How long does this go on for? My car does that until it warms up and then it's fine.

Ken and CC, My comment about the Fultons was merely an attempt to see if you were awake. You were. Ken, that is a very nice looking fleetline. Unscrewing a few bolts could make a huge improvement, though. You know. Further, the addition of bumper tips would be much better investment than the Fulton, me thinks. Nonetheless, great looking car. Is too! Have you thought about adding wood? Best, Charlie
