From my personal experience ...... I was living in Ohio, bought my battery from ANTIQUE BATTERY in Hudson, Ohio, in the month of September.
My '51 was then stored in my heated and cooled garage. I use a 6 volt Battery Tender.
Seven months later, in April, battery would no longer hold a charge.
Took the battery back, they told me battery was "sulfated" would not honor any warranty.
They stuffed a paper in my hand, telling I must charge battery in the "off season".
I did constantly charge that battery, with the same Battery Tender that I still use today. Spoke to deaf ears at that store.
No warranty given out, lost over $100 after seven months in my garage.

Using the Battery Tender on a regular basis has provided me with a "ready to go" vehicle. Thought doing that would always be better for my batteries, being that the cars do not go out often. Never did I think that going that extra step would result in a warranty rejection on a defective battery.

Over the years I have had a few that were bad in the spring, but the were old enough that it was no surprise.

Bob, I your old 51s were tuned up, you would not need no stinkin battery tender. The reason you do, is because you have to grind and grind to get them to kick over I go out to my 41 coupe every month or two and it cranks right up. I use the manual choke. That is why it is there. Call a junk yard and have those old 51 dragged off. Sell for scrap metal value. Then find yourself a nice 41 SD coupe. You will me happier and not so grouchy. I've seen many a crusty ol' fellow mellow right out as soon as they acquired a 41. There's just something magical about it. As to where to get a genuine 41 or 47 or whatever, battery, I don't know. Seems that the right one doesn't exist. All have the wrong wording or color caps. Might as well stick an "Exide" in there. Just a recommendation. Charlie

Charlie, It's not that my cars need a tune up. I need the tune up. If I were feeling chipper, just kickin' my heels, and taking '41's to the scrap yard for gas money, I would be driving my '51's more. Then I wouldn't need the Battery Tenders at all.

Hey Bob ....got a "Charlie Zing ",,cool! My 6 V is sitting up there in the cold garage on the tender for the first time . Last few years I hauled it down here to Fl. and charged off and on over the winter...so we`ll see how it survives the winter when we return in May...I buy the cheapest 6 V I can find....as for most of my batteries over the years ,they last 3-5 years on average,no matter what

David, I had a bad experience with Antique Battery. My other batteries have come from a Farm and Fleet outfit called Tractor Supply. Inexpensive, but still good batteries, don't know the actual manufacturer of their battery.

Tractor Supply used to have their batteries private labeled. The last time I bought one (a year ago) they were selling Exide. There really are not that many battery manufacturers, but lots of suppliers with private labels. When buying you need to compare the specifications to know what you will get for your money.

Steve, Seems the rule of thumb used to be a dollar for a each month of warranty. i.e. $36 = 36 months or there 'bouts. Don't think that holds true anymore. Batteries are much more expensive here lately. Some 12 volt ones run well over a hundred dollars. You're not going to get a 100 month of warranty. Charlie

I agree on the pricing part but have noticed that the newer batterys seem to last longer than they used to. I have one that is 6-1/2 years old and it still works fine but I am going on a long trip and am thinking it's time to change it. Easier here at home than 1000 miles away. Your rule of thumb is still pretty good as a new 6 volt from Tractor Supply is around $80.00 and will last 6-7 years. Not warranteed for that though.

Do you know why Antique Auto Battery has two listed for a 47 Chevy? And looking at all the comments I cannot determine if the battery with the Delco sign is correct or the one with the Chevrolet stivker is the right one. Can you hewlp me out?
