I have the axle housing and propeller shaft assembly removed from the vehicle. I was wondering how to remove the rear axle from the housing. The repair manual is vague on the matter. I wish to replace the inner seals. Does the propeller shaft have to be removed first?

You may need a rear axle shaft puller to pull both axles and bearings from the differential, sometimes they will come out without a puller. Then remove the 10 Hex Head Cap Bolts holding the differential to the housing. The differential and the prop shaft will be removed as a single unit. If you wish to remove the prop shaft you will have to unbolt the differential carrier main caps and remove the differential. Then remove the 3 bearing retainer screws on the prop shaft housing and the prop shaft and bearing will come out.

Thanks Tom. So I take it it should just pull out which is what I thought. Now I have to figure out how to make a puller.

Once you have removed the 4 retaining bolts a few light taps with a hammer while pulling the axle should do the job, I had a stuck one once which I attached a slide hammer to with great success, good luck.
