I'm shopping for vent window weatherstrip. Most prices are over $120 ++. I've come across www.rockauto.com with a product for $60. However their write up claims they have the best of rubber products but mentions "soft sponge rubber" Has anyone had experience with this company and its rubber seals. I thought of using a 1" foam caulking rod backing like weather king sells for home winterizing and triming it with a razor, we'll see. Also, I removed the vent window assembly (crank, window in chrome trim & weatherstrip in channel) The WS channel is rivited around the window pivit posts so further disassemble is problematic. Is it possible to replace the seal in one piece? Any helpful hints apprecciated. Larry OB

I've not used the Rock Auto product. When I was restoring my '38 I bought from either The Filling Station or Chevs of the 40s and the item fit poorly, short on both ends. It was a repackaged item from MetroMolding if I remember right. I ended up buying from Steele and it fit perfectly. I don't believe you could make a non molded strip type rubber work well. It's a pretty specific size & shape to fit right.

Many of Rock Auto's rubber products are made by Metro Mould. From what I've experienced...if you need precision fit, pay more for the better quality Steele products. The grommets on my firewall are Metro products, they are adequate.

Just about everyone on this site has had an issue with window-related moulding installation, so I wouldn't skimp on quality in those areas.

Rock Auto is a good source for many generic parts, and their prices are very good for most items, however, keep an eye on their shipping costs.

I used the seals from Lynn Steele on my '37 coupe and fit perfectly. I wouldn't touch the "soft rubber" seals. You get what you pay for - if you're lucky !!
