I recently bought a 1950 Styleline Deluxe to restore. It has 4 broken rocker arms that need replaced. I have no paperwork with this car that tells me if the engine is the 216 or 235. How can I detemine which one is in this car. I know it is original. It was running a month ago (before I bought it). Any help would be appreciated.

If the car is original and has a standard 3-speed manual transmission you have a 216 engine.

If it is equiped with a automatic transmission (Powerglide) it would have a 235 engine. However I would verify the engine before making any repairs. Can you give us the casting number from the cyl head?

The casting number on the head located under the valve cover is 3835517.

Thanks for the help.

You have a 216 engine, that is the head the was orginally installed on 1950-1953 216 engines.

Craig, Its a 216 engine. The 216 engine push rod cover extends up to the valve cover-the 1950 and up 235 engine push rod cover is much shorter-extends only up to the top of the block.

The broken rocker arms most likely were caused by valves sticking.Very common on a 216 that has been setting unused for a period of time.Often caused by bad gasoline.Check for bent push rods also.Spray some automatic trans. fluid between the valve spring coils unto the valve guides. Then tap the top of the valve stem with a hammer to help free the guides. If the valves remain stuck removing the head will be necessary. If you get it running pour some Marvel Mystery Oil or ATF thru the carb. throat to help free the valves also.A pint in the gas tank would also be good for it.

Thanks for the tips. I need some more help though. I have 4 broken rocker arms and need to find replacements. They are not available at Napa or Autozone. I have also tried to find them online, but with no success. Does anyone know where I can get some? I would also like to replace the push rods while I am at it. I would really like to get it running.

Thanks

Craig

There are four different rock arms -left exhaust-right exhaust-left intake-right intake-The also have a number cast on them-839459-460-463-464---this will identify which one you need.Sure some one here will come up with the parts for you.

need to know if they are exhaust L or R, or Intake L or R. Rocker arms for 41 -53 216 are the same. Are the arms broken or is it the push rods bent? Usually the push rods bend and leave the rockers very loose. I like to straighten the bent push rods so they are usable. Use them for short while, making sure the valves are not going to stick again, then install good ones.
I do have a few new rocker arms not sure of application at this time.

The number that are cast on the arms that are broken are 82, 94, 88, and 93. The rockers are located in position 2, 3, 6 and 10 from front to rear. I am not sure which ones are the intake and exhaust at this point since I just got the car. All my previous engine experience is with V8 chevy and ****. These look alot different to me. Any information is appreciated. I am working on ordering a service manual, but have not done it yet.

"Working on ordering a service manual" will be a big help when you get one. There is one online that one of our members was kind enough to spend many hours doing...hold on I will look it up.....

Ok I am back now..

even though the url says 1951 it is for 49-54 chevrolets. here it is.... Service manual for 49 -54

Also, If you think this is a good site, please consider sending Keith Hardy a donation to help him defray some of the cost of maintaining the sites, He is a working person like most of us.....

Obsolete Chevrolet parts, the Filling Station and possibly Kanter would be places to look for the rocker arms.
