I need to have the valves ground/replaced on my 34 DA Master Sedan. Engine was supposed to be original. Existing Exhaust valves have rect. key and intake have U shaped key. Engine casting number is 837231 10, build date H 16 4; head casting number is 837981.
Purchased 32 DA inlet valve 837316 & exhaust valve 837317 and guides.
Exhaust valve is OK, but inlet valve is too long
My research has shown me that this head casting number is applicable to the 601988 35-36 head and that what I need is the part number 838437 35-36 valves using the U shaped key.
Before going out and finding these valves can anyone confirm that I am correct?

1934 Master engines had the retangular key. An improved and large key than previusly used. They still had a problem of the key pulling through the cap. This is for intake and exhaust valves. After a couple of years Chevrlet offered and improved valve that used the "U" type keepers. The intakes of this new design is part # 609379 and the exhausts are 609380. The valve spring cap for the 1935 and up engine and keepers are then used.
Years back I changed over my '34 to the improved versions.
What valves do you neeed? I may be able to help.
The later replacement valve guide used is the 1935-1940 guides.
You do have a 1934 Master head.
The earlier than 1934 valve stems are of a smaller diameter.

No I do not have a 34 Head. The Head I referenced is the head that was on the motor. This isn't what I was told about the car, so it is what it is.
I need six intake valves for this head. I intend to use the 837317 exhaust valves I have unless you see a reason why I should not. I have new rect. copper plated keys and guides.
Where is the best place to get the intake valve you referenced and guides to go with?
I would consider a 34 head if you knew where a decent head was located.

Sorry, I miss-read your post. Head with casting number 837981 is a 1935 Master all 1936 head. A 1934 Master head is 837230. The 1936 head had all valves with the U shaped keys.
Can't help with parts for that.

Thank You for your reply. I needed confirmation that my analysis and research was correct. Many things changed on a yearly basis back in those days. A 34 was what I learned to drive, got my drivers license in and don't ask me about winding it up to 35-40 in second gear. Dad's only comment was *I need to go to work on Monday".Kieth

The car was running with this 35 master head on the 34 master block. Is there any compatibility problem?

It will be important to use the correct head gasket. I would need to see your old one to determine what year it is. If it ran OK before it should be OK.

Thank You for the reply. I should look for another head. This head has some cracks.
