I am in need of a set of working 1940 Chev passenger horns. I know that the part number for the horns changes, I believe in 1949 if I recall correctly. I have a couple 1940 sets that are way beyond repair (look like they were under water for 50 years), but I do have the brackets that attach to them. Question, Besides the difference in the bracket location, would a set from later years (up to 54) work in terms of appearance, tone, etc. Would my 1940 brackets attach to a later set, allowing me to get the correct "angle" to they would hang like a 1940 horn is supposed to? Thank you.

1940-1948 horns are the same - EXCEPT - some 1941's do not have the usual sea shell horn but rather a short projector type horn the sounds like the Road Runner BBBP-BEEP horn.

There is a 41 horn for sale on ebay now for $9.95. It is typical that horns need to be rebuilt/adjusted. The one on ebay looks unmolested. I would buy it and try to see if you can get it working.

Have you carefully taken apart the horns you have? Can you record the steps you used so you can reassemble it? Have you tested your horns to see if they work? The most common problem with a horn is the wire to it needs to be replaced, a simple solder job. The second problem is you need to find a way to make sure you have a good ground connection for testing.

Carefully, practice cleaning up and disassembling the two horns you have. Use a penetrant oil to soak all screws and bolts to remove them easily.

Following is a post with info about a business that rebuilds horns:

The guy's name where I've had some of my Horns worked on is Bill Randall at The Horn Shop. Phone 315-336-8841.

Good luck, Mike

P.S. I could post some pictures of the disassembly process for others to comment on. I have only rebuilt one set of horns.
