Does everyone use a new crush washer when changing oil? On my stock 216 for my 38 Master Deluxe I am going to use a modern crush washer when installing my oil drain plug. 49-54 topic discussed this, but nothing in the 37-42 category. This will be my first oil change on my 38 so I don't know what to expect. My BMW and Acura use crush washers so I figure it would be good for my 38.

I've never replaced mine and have never had a issue of leakage arise.

On my 51 drain plug and the top bolt on my oil filter, I installed new copper washers and that made them leak proof without all that much torque. The copper washers can get work hardened after a while and need to be replaced.

My take on seals of any kind is not double them. Especially one on oil filters. copper ones too, wherever they appear.

My first car was 47 Plymouth Special Deluxe, and I do not remember a washer on drain plug bolt, but it makes perfect sense to have a fresh washer that conforms to the bolt and oil pan surface for a better seal. Funny, but the simplest of things are a mystery if you don't know about them, which is why this forum is so awesome. Than you all for the help learning the basics.

My oil drain plug is leaking slightly so I will try a copper washer. Did you buy them at the local Can Tire? Thanks

Question: Didn't some oil pan plugs come with a copper (or copper looking) material at the base of the threads and on the sealing surface of the plug?

Seems that I have seen that sort of thing? Just wondering.

41Chevy,
I bought an assortment box of copper washers at Princess Auto. They have been very useful. For those of you that haven't been in one, Princess Auto in Canada sells very similar products to Harbour Freight.
