Was the back of the hood painted, primer or bare? I've seen them all different ways. Could it have been different at each plant? Input please. Thank you, Joe

The under side of the hood on my '34 and '39 was a gray waterproff primer. The same primer that was used on the top side. If you polished through the color coat on top of the hood the gray would show. Chevrolet used the gray primer on hoods and fenders, Fisher Body used a red primer on body parts.

For 1932, under the hood was painted body color.

You could do body color on one side and primer on the other.
Would loose 1/2 the points deducted.....regardless what the judge thinks/knows.
I would email the '33 tech advisor. He is pretty sharp.

I just sent Dave an e-mail to see what he has to say. Of 33628s built in Oakland. Car O-128 is dark red primer with color over sprayed from the front side. O-54 has been repainted. Mine O-16, hood has been replaced...Joe

This is what I got back from Dave Sylvain.....Joe

Hi Joe

I think this is a bit controversial. Bruce Deford also has a hood (1932) that has all original paint, and is in primer underneath. But there is no factory documentation proving one way or the other, as far as I know. Personally, if I were judging, I would not deduct points for the underhood being in primer, or being painted body color.

Dave

The underside of the hood on my all original 1932 Special Sedan barn survivor is painted body color from the factory. Bruce DeFord was here yesterday and he checked out the underside of the hood on my '32 and he saw the body color.

Let me add one more question.......when the underside is painted body color can you tell if it was also finished to the same level of gloss or simply sprayed the same color and left un-buffed out? My two originals (black cars) are not primer and not body color. They appear to be a simple coated steel

Does the coating have a color? The one hood I saw had sort of a red oxide color. The only places it was still visible was in the area where the hood welting was...Joe

The body color on the underside of the hood on my original 1932 has not been buffed out so it has a duller shine than the paint on the body of the car.

On the hoods that were not painted body color there is body color overspray around the edges and through the vents or louvers.

And, the overspray on the inside of the hood from the factory was very tacky looking as well. Personally, I prefer the hoods that are finished off on the underside with body paint.
