I have found a Johnson overdrive unit that I was thinking of installing on my 28. Does anyone have any pros or cons on these? Also what is a fair price? Thank you in advance John.

Here's info from Ron Beam in San Jose. You can send me a private message (PM) if you want to contact him directly.

Cheers, Dean
Quote
Pros:
  • Obviously the additional gearing and drivability.
  • Originality - they were available as of about 1927.

Cons:
  • They leak and throw oil but can be made not to. If they run dry, they self-destruct quickly.
  • They can be noisy. Some are, some aren't. It depends on the condition of the input coupling gear and other factors.
  • They can jump out of gear. The spring detent on the shift fork is fussy but can be fixed.
  • Installation on 25-27 is straight forward but on 28, the brake equalizer bracket to the universal housing must be shortened and a bracket fabricated.

Fair Price: What you're willing to pay. There really aren't many comparable alternatives that don't require more extensive modifications.

Here's a thread that talks about the installation of a Volvo overdrive into a '26 Chevy: https://vccachat.org/ubbthreads.php/topics/448411/overdrive-installers.html.

It has pics towards the end of the thread.

Ron Beam in San Jose, CA has this kind of set up in his '28.

Enjoy! Dean
