First time poster here. I have a 1951 Deluxe with a 216 that I started work on a few years back. The person doing my engine painted it green back then based on some research he supposedly did. Now I'm finally ready to install the engine but after searching past messages I'm not sure of the color. The overall consensus appears to say gray. However I have seen some posts mentioning green. Here's how my engine is painted now. Is this totally wrong? If some engines were close to this color I'd rather not repaint. I'm not planning on entering this in any contests so I don't need it to be perfect. Thanks for any help. John

Hi John, Sorry but its totally wrong.Never even have seen any Chevrolet engine that color. All Chevrolet engines from 1929 thru 1953 (except 1953 Power Glide engine) were the same color-the dark blue gray color mentioned in many posts.Search engine paint.......but it sure is pretty

Hey guys, isn't that a East Coast 1928 Engine color? I would call it Bell telephone company or ONAN green!

Valve cover should be same color as the rest of the engine. Mike

Oh well. I guess it's better to find out now than after it's back in the car.
Thanks guys, I'm sure I'll be a regular on this forum since I'm starting back on this project.

jklier, Maybe your paint guy had just done a paint job for Southwestrn Bell on one of their service trucks and had paint left over.....What if he had just completed a re-painting of a "Mary Kay" Caddy? Then it would have been T***y Pink!!!!

Hey what's the deal about the Blue Flame 6, I have seen the decals for sale on E-Bay? I'm just a novice on colors of engines etc, but I'm sure I will be schooled before I get My 53 on the road. I plan to do mine up to original as possible. Thanks

If your 1953 has a standard transmission the engine is painted the old dark blue-gray color. This engine has NO decal on the valve cover.
If your 1953 has a Power Glide automatic transmission the engine is painted blue. The Blue Flame Decal in on top of the valve cover-to the right side. This is the first passenger car engine to have a decal on the valve cover. There are vendors that sell decals for earlier years but they are incorrect.

Gene, but what if the engine is a powerglide engine and the car has a standard transmission? Would you need to paint the transmission black?
