I have been trying to get the door and window handles off the interior of the door panel of my 1950 Styleline Deluxe 2 door. I cannot seem to fit anything down to engage the wire retainer. Is there a door handle removal tool available or can anyone tell me the secret to removing the handles without damaging the door panel?
Thanks for the help.

Hi ctuggle1, There is a very inexpensive tool you can purchase at your local parts house. It will be located on one of the carrousels that has replacement door handles ect. You may also take a bicycle spoke and bend the end into a "J". Use this tool to remove the "C" clip from the low point in the "C". (The tool mentioned above is used from the front (Two sides of the "C" pointing toward you).

I have already tried the universal window handle tool from Autozone. It would not work. I will try the spoke idea. Thanks

The Chevys of the Fortys catalog has several special tools, I have the one Ray is speaking of, you just need to use it correctly, as he says push so that the tool engages the open end and expands the ends.to install them put the clip on the roller and push it over the splined stub, the clip will spring right into place.

If memory serves me right the push off tool will not work on early chevrolets, you need the flat pliers with the crab claws on the ends .I have had mine since the middle fiftys and they even work on my 31.I think the flat push off tool came out in the later sixtys. woody

On the early Cars 28 etc, I had a couple that were gaulded on and rather than break a rare handle I used a battery terminal puller, after I got the screw out. I have had one of the flat push off tools since about 1976 and it works on my 51 and 53 ok. Before then I used a packing hook (for water pump packing) and even some small needle nosed Vice grips. Also for years I would put the handle back on and then try to shove the clip on with a flat balded screw driver. One day I was watching a body man at the Chevrolet Body shop and he put the clip on the handle and shoved it on the splined stub, and it went right on and the clip snapped into place, DUUUH!

The tool to remove handles from 1950 and up Chevrolets and GM cars is a flat device with a wide forked end.The tool is made by several companys but all function the same. Its inserted behind the handle (long end of handle) and must fit into the little grove that the retaining wire clip slides into.It forces the clip out of the grove. It you can get one handle off and examine the handle it will help to understand what you are trying to accomplish. But must be inserted from the correct direction-the long or actual handle grip end. A simular tool was used on prior years except the forked opening was much smaller.

I finally got it. I ended using a long flat standard screw driver to pry out the retaining rings. Thanks to all for the tips and info.
