Hi. With regard to the type of lubricant the steering box (49 passenger in this case) receives, the manual specifies special all season lubricant. A search of the net came up with some stuff that sounded good, had a GM part #. Called a dealer and it was discontinued in 2002 :( . They suggested checking Carquest to see if they could cross reference the #. No, but they recommended 80-90 gear oil. So...what do my fellow Chevy enthusiasts recommend for this application? Thanks!

Chassis grease is to "thick"-90 0r 140 gear oil too "thin"...A mixture of the two is just right.

Thanks.

If the gear has not been rebuilt and your just topping it off I would fill it with just 140 gear oil. This will seep into all the bearings etc. plus -if it has been filled with chassis grease it will thin out the grease thats in there.Making the "just right" viscosity. If the seal is bad and the gear oil leaks out top off with chassis grease.

some one mentioned 600w which was apparently used in older F**** and is now available at the Filling Station, apparently almost a cross between grease and gear oil.

I have a qt. of the 600W-Its heaiver than 140 but still pours.
At one time I had several tubes of the GM steering gear grease. It was considerably heaiver than any gear oil - about like STP - which also can be added to gear oil for steering boxes.

Would the above mixture of 90 & 140 be the same for a 1954 steering box on a BelAir PG?
