Can the standard 4:11 gears on a standard 50 rear end be changed out for the power glide or later model without swaping the rear end housing? IF so whre do you get the gears?

You get the gears from our great friends-the street rodders
.
What to look for -- Rear end from 1950-54 Power Glide-3.54 raio-or 1953-54 stick-3.70 ratio.(would be my choice).

The present axle housing (banjo housing), axles etc. remain in car.The torque tube, drive shaft, and center carrier are transplanted to your car. This is done with out disturbing the ring gear and pinion.

If just the ring gear and pinion are installed in the present rear end the case the ring gear bolts to must be changed and pinion depth and ring gear to pinion adjustment made.

The above rear ends are not too difficult to find-but are getting scarce due to demand.

the swap chevynut mentions also eliminates the problem of differences in the 53/54 wheel cylinder master cylinder ratios.

Glyn, have you had a problem with the difference of the 53 master cylinder? I have both the 1" and the 7/8" and I like the older 1" better, since the wheel cylinders and brake shoes, and drums are all the same from 51 thru 54, seems to me the 1" master cylinder lets you have a little more clearance and less drag on the shoes. I have a strong heavy foot anyway.
