On 1948 Chevy grill guards what is the purpose of the plate tacked to the back on the center cross bar ? I have seen guards with and without the plate . http://1948chevy.com/images-acc/grill-gd48.jpg

They must have had problems with it bending and the plate is a rienforcement.

I have had both and the ones without the bar on the back are flimsy and tend to be not as straight as the ones with.

Years ago it was common to bounce the front end (as if to test the shocks) by pulling the bumper up and down. The guard rail probably made a good handle and would bend in the center.

Fairly early in 1948 (I believe about March) they introduced the reinforced guards. As we've guessed, I suppose they needed a little more strength in them. Jim you got that right....It took me a while to find one and of course I paid more than I should have...Then off to be plated $$$$$$$...Not too many of the lookers realize what original, restored parts can cost

CC, I noted that you will go to any expense to upgrade and accessorize your Fleetline. It is a beautiful and extremely desirable car. I just know that all those who own lesser 47/48s are envious and wish they would get one under the tree this Christmas. What a thrill to be on top of the world. I was wondering what a love one might get somebody who has everything, for Christmas. A large yacht? No, no matter the size, quality and appointments that would bound to be a disappointment to a Fleetline owner. How about a Rolls Royce? Nope, that would make the Fleetline feel apprehensive about being thought of as inferior. Just for a second or two. A Fleetline owner would never allow that to happen. How about a date with the number one supermodel in the world? Take the Fleetline and drive her out to to a moon-lit pond. Well, that wouldn't work because she would get bored just a-sitting there on the front seat whilst listening to frogs croak, coyotes howl (Oh, what music they make!), and termites snack on the country club wood, all whilst you continually point out the features of the car. Hmm. Well, let's see. Oh, joy! I've got it! After having giving this head-splitting question much deep thought, I think I have the best answer. It is this: (Read on) One would give a Fleetline owner a "Visiting Angel." (You have seen the ads) They could bring you some hot chocolate whilst you are sitting out in the garage constantly marveling at the good gift the Lord has given you. Yes! The Fleetline is it. She could sit on the front seat next to you and smile as you go over and over the beauties and features of the car and never tire of listening. Play the radio. Listen to WCKY! Order some baby chicks, talking harmonicas, etc. from Wayne Rainey and Lonnie Glossen. Listen to the electric clock tick. What a gift the Visiting Angel would be. Pretty too!! Only Fleetliners can appreciate the profound good fortune they have in their cars. Even more so if it has the Country Club kit on it. Oh, Mercy. Hallelujah! Do you feel all giddy whenever you go near the Fleetline? Kind of like you need to relieve yourself owing to all the excitement? That is understandable. Is too! Charlie, how did you know the wife hates the Fleetline,she won't even sit in it, let alone admire it..Not because of it's beauty or the rarity of its wood trim, It is because I have something better then her!!I will need to look into the Angel thing, do you think they shut up and do what they are told. Sounds Great!!!

Ray, I just tossed that in to see if any of us remembered those times. Looks like just the two of us. There was also a station in Wheeling, WV and Del Rio, TX. And, one for the Louisiana Hayride. I don't remember the call letters of any of those. Couldn't pull in those stations on just any night but WCLY you could usually get in NC. I doubt that one could pull in those stations with an under-the-unning-board antenna. Don't know. Good to remember those days. Best, Charlie

Glad I got mine when I did....$900.......wow...I might be crazy but not that NUTS....Another real costly accessory is the "correct" Guide directional signal switch...Try to find one of those...Do not get it confused with the one with the raised L&R lettering

yrs ago when I got my car there was this box of parts and it had a Guide turn signal and I sold it on ebay and that thing sold for 250.00 bucks..I still have a grill guard looks more like a push or brush guard to me it mounts down behind the bumper guards.....

Sounds like the after market guard that looks like a chrome plated pipe.
