The transmission shaft that mates with the engine passes through a bearing retainer. I seem to have a lot of side wards play with this transmission shaft and am wondering if this is normal, the bearing retainer is warn in the center, or the internal bearing is warn. An thoughts? Jim

Hello jim Del,
If you were able to compare your bearing to a new bearing, you'd know if there are issues or not. Where to find a new bearing is not known. To view your transmission parts breakdown, check out 'oldcarmanualproject.com', go to, 1929-1932 Chevrolet Master Parts Price List, select Transmission Group, page 25 Main Drive Gear, see: C Bearing with cup, main drive gear (not sold separately) $2.70 590545. See cutaway transmission picture at bottom of page.

The front ball bearing may be loose or the roller bearing (cageed) between the front and rear transmission shafts.

Sounds like you might need a new front transmission bearing.
