I’m replacing the transmission/master cylinder cross member on my 1937 Master car and would like to confirm the mounting holes for the parts attached to it before I install it. The original cross member on mine was cut by the previous owner and part of it is missing, so I’m not sure about the purpose for all of the holes (or if extras have been added).

I have fitted the transmission mount, hand brake and master cylinder and I know which holes are for the frame rivets and the brake line fitting but still have 4 more to identify. Hope someone can have a look at what is mounted to this cross member and let me know what the holes are for. All appear to be for 5/16 diameter bolts.
#1 & 2 are on the passenger side (front ledge of cross member) with about 3 ¾ inches spacing between.
#3 is near the center of the cross member by the transmission mount. This one may have been added as it looks a bit deformed … I’ll fill it if not required
#4 is on the driver side (front ledge of cross member) just inboard from the brace which mounts the master cylinder.

I'd rather know now than later if I need to fill the holes or look for something else that should be mounted on the cross member. Any ideas are welcome. Tom

My '38 appears to have the same holes except for the one under the trans mount. Looks like all the holes you pointed out are not being used on mine either. Below are some existing pics for reference.

I don't know what they might have been for, hopefully others will say....

Thanks Jim - At least I know 3 are original holes.

ChevNut - your comment lead me to look again at my parts catalogs. The 1937-39 Canadian parts list shows the same cross member for both RHD and LHD cars, so maybe some holes were extras to allow different brackets for various markets. By the way, I see the 1937-38 as the same, but a different number for 1939

In the 37-39 parts book I see #593694 for 1937-38 and #350135 for 1939.

I don't know the difference but maybe it is for the parking brake mount since 39 went to the sliding style with the under dash release rather than the floor mounted handle.

Could it be that by 1941 Chevrolet only offered one version for service?

Both 1939 chassis I have at home has the hole in the dip in the centre of the cross member. They are slightly towards the LH side , and are through both the upper skin and the lower skin. The holes at the outer end fit a cast steel mounting bracket for the RHD master cylinder.

Thanks Jack. The holes near the center of my cross member are in both skins also. Any idea on their use? Could they just be to channel any oil to a single drip point?

I just went and had another look under a chassis, and the cross member has 2 holes in the lower skin at the dip, as seen in Green427's picture above. I would say drain holes for sure.

Thanks all.
Sounds like all the holes are correct and I'm not missing parts to bolt through them. Next job is to install the cross member on my frame.
