My car is a 1931 Special Sedan. The diaphragm on the fuel pump pull rod appears to be swaged on rather than bolted, that is, there is no nut atop a threaded rod. Also there is no 3-bolt spring cover on the bottom housing of the pump.

I want to order a gasket and screen set from the FS but want to make sure what model fuel pump I have so as to get the right kit. And, any suggestions for getting the diaphragm off the pull rod? There seems to be a cupped disc about 1/2in diameter on top the rod and another larger disc, about 2in diameter on top the diaphragm. Any suggestion/info is appreciated.

Best regards,

Tom

The fuel pump sounds like an aftermarket replacement since the pump that you described is not a stock 1931 fuel pump. You will have to determine exactly what model and year of fuel pump that you have before you can order a kit.

To remove the existing diaphragm from the fuel pump you will have to grind off the top of the shaft to remove the diaphragm. Then, to install the new diaphragm, you will have to center drill the shaft and then thread the hole for an 8-32 machine screw.

You may want to find the correct fuel pump for your 1931 and then order a kit for that since those pumps are easy to rebuild.

Thanks JYD for the quick reply. I rather suspected that the pump on my car was not original as it did not match the schematics and description in the repair manual nor those I found on the internet. Best Regards,

Sounds similar to one that I have. Bob Marx in Arpin Wisconsin (he is on this list) rebuilt mine for a reasonable price.

Your pump likely will use the '34-'36 rebuild kit. The other option described by the Dog is also viable as long as the valves are in good shape.
