This afternoon a friend and I tried to install a spring in my hood latch that had no spring. We finally got it on by putting it in a vice and using needle nose pliers, but we didn't think it was right cause we couldn't make it work off the car, and we didn't want to install it and risk not being able to open the hood. I now know we had the spring installed in the right place, cause it looks like the pictures of new ones I found on line. Is there a way to cock the mechanism before installing the spring? My guess is that the mechanism is so worn that it will no longer work.

Has anyone done this? Is there a way to cock the latch mechanism before the spring is attached? Or does it matter? I'd like to save the cost of a new a new latch if possible.
Thanks,
Sid
